My ward is pretty great. Some Sundays are more dull than others but I rarely find it dull.  We had great talks given on Sunday and I was pretty stoked about them.  We have humorous talks, and sincere talks.  We even have one woman from a pentacostal background who gets all groovy to the hymns. Ex-bishop\u0026#39;s wife. It\u0026#39;s funny and great to see but it\u0026#39;s just  not my thang.  And I\u0026#39;m a pretty groovy person.  Still, I\u0026#39;m not going to sway and stomp my foot and croon like a Glee cast member.  \u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eYes, we have a culture with more solemnity than some other faiths.  Oh well.  Does everything have to be exciting?  Are our attention spans so weak from media, Twitter, Facebook, iPhones, that we need vibrant stimulation at all times?  Can\u0026#39;t we just sit in the quiet, in the seriousness, in the slow pace for an hour and ten minutes? \u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eOur Relief Society passes around candy every Sunday. That\u0026#39;s cool. We crack jokes. We contribute. It\u0026#39;s not Cranium but it\u0026#39;s lovely. \u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eI think the big problem is life-long members who take the gospel for granted. THAT is why they\u0026#39;re not excited, not because we\u0026#39;re missing guitars.  Try out church in Canada and you\u0026#39;ll find a lot more converts who are still grateful and still excited about the gospel.  They\u0026#39;re not jumping up and down but they ARE taking notes. \u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eThe problem is not the church.  The church is different all around the world.  The problem might be that Utah THINKS that Utah is the church. As a whole, there is a sense of complacency. We\u0026#39;ve the truth and we\u0026#39;re comfortable with that. A sense of duty, as you\u0026#39;ve said, keeps us coming to church. Still, we\u0026#39;re not doing what we\u0026#39;ve been commanded. For the most part, the members go through the motions of sacrament meeting and move onto their class. The spirit testifies to the truth but there is no electricity.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eAn exception: A couple members have been spending a few hours a week helping the missionaries. When the talk about their experiences they have an incredible excitement. I felt that excitement as it was so very infectious.  So, how do we get this kind of energy into other aspects of our Sunday lives? A system could be devised that would mix a small amount of supported clergy (supported in the same way the brotheren are) with a majority lay ministry, and the ones picked to move to SLC could come from either.
